“I Wanted to Rap, But Acting Chose Me” – Yvonne Nelson

Before gracing the big screen, actress Yvonne Nelson had dreams of becoming a rapper—until fate and a chance meeting with a filmmaker changed her life forever.

Actress and filmmaker Yvonne Nelson has revealed that her childhood dream was to become a rapper before fate steered her toward acting.

Speaking in an interview, Yvonne reminisced about her high school days, when she was part of a rap group inspired by the Fugees. “I wanted to be a rapper. Back in school, I used to rap a lot. We had a group like the Fugees, and I was the Lauryn Hill of the group,” she shared.

Her passion for rap shone during school entertainment events, but an unexpected encounter with Ghanaian filmmaker Abdul Salam changed her trajectory.

“I didn’t even audition for a role. Abdul Salam saw me at Afrikiko, spoke to me, took my number, and invited me to the set. That’s how everything started for me,” she recounted.

That chance meeting led to her breakout role in Princess Tyra, propelling her into stardom. Despite her success, Yvonne admitted juggling acting with academics at Central University was a challenge, but she persevered to carve out her place in the entertainment industry.
