Kofi Baah Acheamfour, the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has sharply criticized leaders at the Ashanti Regional Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
He accused them of intentionally sabotaging President John Dramani Mahama’s administration amid persistent power outages in the region.
Speaking an interview, Acheamfour argued that the frequent and erratic power cuts, widely known as dumsor, are not the result of technical issues or standard maintenance, but a deliberate effort to damage Mahama’s reputation and his government’s effectiveness.
“How can you cut the power seven times in one day, including from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., and then call it maintenance?” he questioned. “This is not incompetence; it’s sabotage.”
Acheamfour called on the NDC’s national leadership to take urgent and decisive action against what he sees as a coordinated effort to undermine Mahama’s administration and discredit its achievements.
He singled out key figures in the region’s energy sector, demanding their immediate reassignment. “People are actively working to sabotage this government. The Regional Minister and the Energy Minister must act with caution and resolve,” he warned.
In defending Mahama’s appointees, Acheamfour asserted that they are all capable, experienced, and committed to delivering results. He emphasized that, unlike previous administrations, Mahama has shown the political will to hold his appointees accountable. He cited the resignation of former Transport Minister Dzifa Attivor, who stepped down over the bus branding controversy, as proof of Mahama’s commitment to accountability.
“Since the return to democratic rule in 1992, no government has been as lenient yet effective as Mahama’s,” Acheamfour said. “His track record speaks for itself, and it’s time for us all to support him.”
He concluded by urging NDC supporters and the public to unite and hold the ECG accountable, stressing that the party remains focused on restoring efficient governance and economic stability.
