Eric Dier to Leave Bayern Munich After Rejecting Contract Extension

Defender leaves Bayern Munich after rejecting contract extension, with Monaco move in the works.

Bayern Munich defender Eric Dier has confirmed he will leave the club at the end of the season after turning down the offer of a new contract.

The 31-year-old joined Bayern from Tottenham in January 2024, initially on a six-month loan. He was then signed permanently by the German giants that summer, making 45 appearances for the six-time Champions League winners.

“We had discussions with Eric about extending his contract,” said Bayern’s sporting director Christoph Freund. “He informed us that he does not wish to extend his stay and will be leaving. He’s been a great person to work with, and we’ve enjoyed our time together. We hope he can end his spell with us by winning his first title.”

BBC Sport understands that Dier is in advanced negotiations with Ligue 1 side Monaco, with talks focused on a three-year contract, including the possibility of an additional 12 months.

Bayern Munich are on the verge of clinching the Bundesliga title, and can secure the crown with a win against rivals RB Leipzig this weekend. If they succeed, it will be Dier’s first major trophy of his career.

Dier, who has earned 49 caps for England, has come close to silverware in the past, finishing as a runner-up in the 2015 and 2021 Carabao Cup finals, as well as the 2019 Champions League final with Tottenham.
