Muntaka: All Beggars and Prostitutes Will Be Removed from Our Streets

Interior Minister announces nationwide operation to restore order in major urban areas

The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has reaffirmed the government’s determination to clear the streets of beggars and sex workers as part of a broader initiative to restore order in major urban areas.

During a visit to the Northern Region, the minister announced that a nationwide operation—spearheaded by his ministry in collaboration with security agencies—will soon roll out across five major cities, including Tamale.

At the commissioning of a new 24-unit apartment block for the Ghana Immigration Service, Muntaka emphasized the urgency of the move, citing a recent operation in Accra that led to the arrest of over 2,000 foreign beggars.

Nearly half have already been deported, with the remainder expected to be processed by the end of the week.

He also issued a firm warning to street-based sex workers, particularly foreign nationals, saying they too would be targeted and removed.

Muntaka urged those involved to leave voluntarily or face enforced repatriation.

“The presence of beggars and street prostitutes isn’t just an eyesore—it’s a national security risk,” he stated. “We are determined to remove every last one of them. This is not a threat; it’s a promise.”
