Kumasi Mayor Launches City-Wide Decongestion Exercise Today

Traders warned as unauthorized structures face demolition in major clean-up drive

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), under the leadership of Mayor Richard Ofori Agyeman, will today, Monday, May 5, begin a city-wide decongestion exercise aimed at clearing unauthorized structures and removing traders from pavements.

In a briefing with journalists, the Mayor said the operation will target key areas including the Kejetia Roundabout—also known as the Otumfuo Roundabout—and the Adehyeman area near the Kumasi Zoo.

“All unauthorized occupants will be cleared from these areas. Any metallic objects or goods placed on the streets will also be removed,” Mr. Agyeman stated.

He emphasized that the public has already been adequately informed and warned that the Assembly will no longer tolerate the illegal use of public spaces. “There will be no further notices. Everyone knows the Assembly will no longer entertain encroachment,” he added firmly.

Since assuming office, Mayor Agyeman has taken a tough stance on street trading and the occupation of pavements in Kumasi’s central business district. He previously warned traders to vacate these areas or face sanctions—including, controversially, the threat of being lashed.

He noted that traditional enforcement methods such as arrests and confiscation of goods have failed to produce lasting results, as traders often return to the same spots.

The mayor described the persistent street trading as an act of indiscipline that contributes significantly to congestion in the city—something his administration is now determined to fix.
