Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as Adenta Kumi—a youth activist of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former parliamentary aspirant—has been charged with publication of false news following his arrest by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) on Friday.
Kumi is accused of spreading false information both via his X (formerly Twitter) account and during a radio interview concerning a petition he submitted to the President. The petition demands the dissolution of the committee investigating the Chief Justice amid serious allegations.
At the heart of the petition are claims that may jeopardize the integrity of the inquiry. Kumi alleges that on May 15, 2025, after the committee’s inaugural sitting, Justices Pwamang, Adibu-Asiedu, and Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi were seen dining with Thaddeus Sory—counsel for petitioner Daniel Ofori—at Santoku Restaurant in Accra’s Airport Residential Area. He further claims that the group was overheard discussing the petition’s matters.
The NPP has expressed deep concern over Kumi’s arrest and detention. Speaking on Citi Prime News, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, condemned the arrest, suggesting it is directly linked to the petition.
“Well, certainly we think it is linked to the petition until the NIB comes out with a different reason because that is what we all know—that he has petitioned the President this week and is yet to receive an acknowledgment of it,” Frimpong stated.
The unfolding situation continues to attract significant public and political attention.
