Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi and the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), appeared at the headquarters of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Accra on Monday, May 26, 2025.
His presence follows a botched attempt to detain him at his residence on Friday, May 23, by a joint team of National Security and police officers. The attempted arrest, which played out in full view of the public and was captured in widely circulated online videos, sparked controversy and claims of political targeting.
Chairman Wontumi arrived at the CID in the company of his legal representatives — former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame and ex-Asante-Akim North MP Andy Appiah-Kubi.
While the Ghana Police Service has not disclosed the specifics of the investigation, insider sources suggest it may be tied to recent political events involving the NPP. Wontumi’s legal team is expected to brief the media after their meeting with CID officials.
The dramatic turn of events has captured national attention, with supporters alleging that the failed arrest was an attempt to silence one of the party’s most outspoken figures.
