The wife of Alfred Ababio Kumi, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has allegedly suffered a miscarriage following his dramatic arrest on the morning of Friday, May 23, 2025.
The distressing news was revealed by Kumi’s mother, Nana Ama Owusu, during an interview.
According to her, Kumi’s wife was four months pregnant at the time and is now hospitalized following the traumatic incident, leaving the entire family heartbroken.
Recounting the event, Nana Ama stated that around 5:30 a.m., eight armed individuals—only one of whom wore a police uniform—forcefully entered Kumi’s residence. The operation reportedly followed Kumi’s outspoken criticism of the potential removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
“Two claimed they were CID officers, but when I asked them to speak with me, one pushed me aside. They barged into my room aggressively,” she said.
She went on to describe how the men used rifle butts to batter the gate. Alarmed by the commotion, Kumi’s wife rushed to investigate, only to panic at the sight of the armed men. When one officer allegedly gave the order to fire a shot, she fled in terror, falling and suffering severe bleeding as a result.
Despite the family’s desperate attempts to accompany the arresting officers, their pleas were ignored. They later learned that Kumi was taken to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
The arrest appears to be linked to a recent petition Kumi submitted to President John Mahama, calling for the disbandment of the committee investigating Chief Justice Torkornoo. Kumi accused committee members of misconduct, alleging they were seen dining with Thaddeus Sory—legal counsel for the petitioner—in what he described as an inappropriate meeting following the committee’s initial session.
The incident has sparked public outcry, with many questioning the tactics used during Kumi’s arrest and the circumstances leading to the tragic loss.
