Flooding in Bibiani Destroys Property, Displaces Dozens

Residents in New Compound, Dansoman, and New Town forced to flee as properties are destroyed

Torrential rains have wreaked havoc in parts of Bibiani, specifically the New Compound, Dansoman, and New Town suburbs, leaving many residents and business owners displaced after severe flooding submerged homes, shops, and access roads.

Locals were forced to evacuate quickly as floodwaters engulfed the area. Many described the event as yet another chapter in a long-standing struggle with seasonal flooding, which they say has become a distressing norm during the rainy season.

Traders in the New Compound and Dansoman markets suffered heavy losses, with damaged or destroyed goods including furniture, electronics, clothing, and perishables. Floodwaters swept through kiosks and stores, leaving behind devastation and debris.

Frustration is mounting among affected residents, who blame blocked gutters and inadequate waste management for the recurring floods. They are demanding urgent action from authorities.

Mr. Seth Assan, Assembly Member for New and Old Compound, has urged the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipal Assembly to desilt clogged drains and implement a comprehensive drainage plan.

He emphasized that the current state of infrastructure poses serious risks to lives and livelihoods, especially with the major rainy season approaching.

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) is expected to assess the damage and offer relief. In the meantime, residents are being warned to stay away from flood-prone areas during and after heavy downpours.
