The 3rd Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Masawudu Osman, has justified his decision to disconnect a TV3 microphone during a recent NPP press conference, describing it as a deliberate act in line with the party’s ongoing boycott of the Media General Group.
Speaking on the Adekye3 Kokobo Morning Show on Mabesh FM 92.7, Alhaji Osman firmly defended his actions, citing persistent bias and disrespect from some of the media house’s presenters, particularly TV3’s Johnnie Hughes.
“I intentionally threw away the TV3 microphone,” he said. “We have boycotted Media General, and we still stand by it. So what were they doing at our press conference?”, he told host, Aduanaba Kofi Ampong.
According to Alhaji Osman, his actions were not impulsive but a clear demonstration of the party’s displeasure with what he described as unprofessional conduct from the media outlet.
“Johnnie Hughes, one of their presenters, does not respect the NPP. He constantly insults and undermines our party. So we will not sit by and allow them to pretend they are neutral,” he stated.
The NPP officially announced its boycott of Media General earlier this year, accusing the network of biased coverage and antagonistic editorial practices. The latest incident has reignited public debate around media-political relations in Ghana.
Reacting to criticism of his conduct at the press conference, Alhaji Osman said he remains unapologetic.
“I am not a small boy. I am highly educated and fully aware of what I’m doing,” he stressed. “This was intentional and symbolic of our continued stance against unfair media treatment.”
As tensions between the NPP and Media General simmer, many observers are calling for dialogue and restraint to ensure press freedom and democratic engagement are preserved. Media General has yet to issue an official response to the incident.
