Baffour Owusu Afriyie, the Otumfuo Abrafourhene and also the Atwima Maakrohene, has publicly supported the newly appointed Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Mayor, Richard Boadi, also known as King Zuba, in his efforts to address issues involving market traders in Kumasi.
However, he has also advised the Mayor to consider providing alternative arrangements for those affected by his actions.
In an interview with Aduanaba Kofi Ampong Emmanuel on Mabesh FM 92.7’s morning show, “Adekye3 Kokobo,” Baffour Owusu Afriyie expressed his support for King Zuba’s stance in matters concerning market traders within the Kumasi metropolis.
The Otumfuo Abrafourhene suggested that while Mayor King Zuba’s actions to regulate trading activities might be necessary and justified, it is equally important for him to explore and implement alternative arrangements or solutions for the traders who may be displaced or affected by these measures.
This statement from a prominent traditional leader in the Ashanti Region underscores the delicate balancing act that traditional authorities often navigate. They frequently find themselves in a position of supporting the enforcement of order and regulations within their communities while also advocating for the welfare and livelihoods of their people, including market traders who play a vital role in the local economy of Kumasi. The Abrafourhene’s comments highlight the need for a comprehensive approach that considers both urban management and the needs of the trading community.
