Drivers Defy Fare Reduction Directive in Ashanti Region

Others have already reduced fares but are unhappy with the decision.

Commercial drivers in the Ashanti Region are resisting the Ghana Private Road Transport Union’s (GPRTU) directive to reduce transport fares by 15%. Despite the announcement, many drivers are still charging old fares, citing high operating costs.

High Operating Costs Cited
Drivers who have implemented the fare reduction expressed dissatisfaction, stating that the prices of spare parts and vehicle maintenance remain unchanged. They argue that the reduction will negatively impact their livelihoods.

Delayed Implementation
Some drivers claim they will only implement the fare reduction starting Monday, May 26, pending further guidance from their leadership.

Others have already reduced fares but are unhappy with the decision.

GPRTU’s Objective
The GPRTU introduced the fare reduction to ease the financial burden on Ghanaians following the recent appreciation of the cedi and drop in fuel prices. However, drivers’ concerns about high operating costs may hinder the successful implementation of the directive.
