Ghana to Introduce Digital Tolling Using Ghana Card – Mahama

The new system will enable automatic deduction of toll fees from mobile money or bank accounts without stopping at tollgates

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to modernizing Ghana’s road toll system by introducing a fully automated, digital alternative.

As part of the 2025 Economic Policy and Budget Statement, the initiative aims to phase out outdated tollbooths and streamline fee collection through a tech-driven solution.

Under the proposed system, every vehicle will be digitally linked to its owner’s Ghana Card. This connection allows toll fees to be automatically deducted from the owner’s mobile money or bank account—eliminating the need for physical booths or manual transactions.

“In the budget, we committed to reintroducing road tolls. Now, with every car connected to its owner’s Ghana Card, there’s no need for toll gates or paper tickets,” Mahama explained. “You drive across, we capture your plate, and GHS 1 is debited straight from your account—simple and efficient.”

The government is currently finalizing the operational details, but Mahama emphasized that the goal is to simplify toll collection while boosting national revenue and cutting inefficiencies tied to manual systems.

This digital shift marks a major step in Ghana’s broader digitization efforts and could reshape how public services are paid for across the country.
