Ghana Closes Tehran Embassy, Evacuates Citizens Amid Escalating Israel-Iran Conflict

Foreign Affairs Minister pledges full protection for Ghanaian nationals in affected regions

Ghana has announced the immediate closure of its embassy in Tehran and the evacuation of all Ghanaian nationals from Iran, following a sharp escalation in hostilities between Israel and Iran.

In a statement posted on Facebook on Monday, June 16, 2025, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, confirmed that the Mahama administration had taken urgent steps to safeguard Ghanaian lives amid the deepening Middle East conflict.

“The Mahama Administration has, in the interest of the protection of Ghanaian lives, decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran following an escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict,” the Minister stated.

All Ghanaian diplomats, students, professionals, and other citizens in Iran are being evacuated through land border crossings, while the embassy in Tehran has been closed with immediate effect.

Mr. Ablakwa also noted that the Ministry is closely monitoring the situation in Israel. As a precaution, Ghana’s embassy operations in Tel Aviv have been scaled down significantly, and Ghanaians residing in Israel have been urged to remain in close contact with the consular office.

“No effort will be spared in protecting Ghanaian lives and keeping all Ghanaians out of harm’s way,” the Minister assured.

He further called for de-escalation and a return to diplomacy, urging both Israel and Iran to pursue peaceful dialogue.

“The Government of Ghana reiterates its demand on both parties to pursue diplomatic options and end hostilities,” he concluded.
