Foreign Affairs Ministry Revokes 701 Diplomatic and Service Passports

Move aligns with legal mandate under the Passports Act to regulate use of official travel documents

In a sweeping move to enforce passport regulations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has cancelled 701 Diplomatic and Service passports across the country. This action follows a nationwide recall aimed at tightening control over the use of official travel documents.

A statement released on Tuesday confirmed that the revoked passports include 341 unreturned Diplomatic passports and 360 Service passports. All have now been added to a stop-list and are invalid for international travel.

This enforcement comes after public directives were issued on January 15 and March 10, 2025, urging former public officials and other categories of beneficiaries to return their official passports. The individuals affected include:

  • Former Ministers and their spouses

  • Ex-Members of Parliament

  • Past Council of State members and their spouses

  • Retired Justices of both Superior and Lower Courts

  • Former Regional Ministers, MMDCEs, and board members

  • National Cathedral Project officials

  • Former non-career ambassadors and their dependents

  • Religious and traditional leaders

  • Businesspeople and entrepreneurs

  • Other former government appointees no longer in service

The Ministry has ordered immediate confiscation of any of these passports found in use, with strict enforcement expected at all border entry and exit points.

This initiative aligns with the enforcement of the Passports and Travel Certificates Act, 1967 (NLCD 155), specifically sections 6 and 7, which govern the issuance and use of official passports in Ghana.
