Bayern Munich Signs Jonathan Tah from Leverkusen

Germany International Joins Bundesliga Champions on Free Transfer

Bayern Munich has officially announced the signing of defender Jonathan Tah on a free transfer from Bayer Leverkusen. The 29-year-old Germany international has penned a four-year contract with the Bundesliga champions.

“I’m very happy to be at Bayern,” Tah stated. “I want to take on responsibility here and work hard every day so that we’re successful as a team and win lots of trophies together.”

Tah spent a decade with Leverkusen, where he was a key part of the squad that achieved an unbeaten Bundesliga and German Cup double during the 2023-24 season under manager Xabi Alonso. He also featured in Leverkusen’s German Super Cup victory over Stuttgart on penalties last August.

After opting not to renew his contract with Leverkusen, the defender had attracted interest from several top clubs, including Premier League sides Liverpool, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur, as well as La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid. However, he has chosen to join Vincent Kompany’s Bayern, who recently saw former Spurs defender Eric Dier depart for Ligue 1 club Monaco earlier this month.

“In Tah, we’ve acquired a player with international experience and quality who won’t need much time to establish himself in our defence,” said Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund.

Tah has earned 35 caps for Germany since his international debut in 2016. He is currently part of head coach Julian Nagelsmann’s squad set to face Portugal in the Nations League semi-finals on Wednesday. The winner of that match will play either France or Spain in the final three days later.

Bayern clinched the 2024-25 German Bundesliga title, finishing 13 points clear of second-placed Leverkusen.
