Kennedy Agyapong Urges Calm Amid Renewed Tensions in Bawku

"No Grievance Justifies Loss of Life": Agyapong Urges Bawku Peace

Former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, has appealed for calm and unity following a resurgence of violence in Bawku and surrounding areas that has claimed lives and left several others injured.

In a statement issued on Sunday, April 13, Agyapong expressed concern over the growing instability triggered by a violent confrontation between the police and some youth on Thursday, April 10. Reports from the scene indicated fatalities, injuries, and the alleged burning of the private residence of Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga.

Agyapong condemned the violence and urged the youth to exercise restraint, emphasizing that no grievance should warrant the loss of life or destruction of property.

“I have followed with deep concern the recent escalation of tensions in Bawku and surrounding communities. The recurring violent outbreaks and reprisals rooted in longstanding tribal conflicts continue to cause pain and instability among our people,” he stated.

He added, “At this critical moment, I call for calm—especially from the youth. No grievance, however deeply felt, justifies the loss of life or the destruction of our communities. Our peaceful coexistence is the foundation of the prosperity and development we seek.”

Agyapong also praised President John Dramani Mahama for initiating a mediation process led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II—a peace effort originally introduced under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

“This is a welcome sign of statesmanship and national unity, one that places Ghana above partisanship,” he noted.

The outspoken politician urged all stakeholders to support the Otumfuo-led mediation committee, highlighting the critical link between national unity and regional peace.

“When there is peace in Bawku, there is peace in Ghana. No part of this country can prosper while another is in pain. Ghana must move forward together,” Agyapong emphasized.

He concluded with a call to action for both leaders and citizens to play their part in ensuring lasting peace returns to Bawku and its environs.
