Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has appealed to party delegates in Sene East, urging them to back his bid for leadership ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Addressing delegates on Wednesday, October 15, Dr. Bawumia emphasized his unwavering commitment to the NPP over the past 16 years, highlighting both his loyalty and service during the party’s highs and lows.
“I have faithfully served the New Patriotic Party for the past 16 years,” he said. “In 2008, while serving as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, I accepted Nana Akufo-Addo’s invitation to be his running mate, even when many believed the party would lose.”
Dr. Bawumia recalled the personal and professional sacrifices he made to support the party, including his decision in 2012 to leave a high-ranking role at the African Development Bank—despite being asked to stay—to assist the NPP during the general elections.
He also pointed to his central role as the lead witness in the 2012 election petition and his tireless efforts in the 2016 campaign, which helped return the NPP to power.
Reflecting on his time as Vice President, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the constitutional limits of the role but said he worked diligently to make a meaningful impact.
“Though the Vice President’s role comes with limited constitutional powers, I made sure to lead major policy initiatives like the Ghana Card, Mobile Money Interoperability, and the Medical Drone Delivery Service,” he noted.
Dr. Bawumia urged delegates to consider his track record, loyalty, and contributions to the party as they decide on the NPP’s future leadership.
