Selorm Branttie: Over 3.4 Million Ghanaians Now Engaged in Cryptocurrency Transactions

Ghana risks missing out on the economic benefits

Selorm Branttie, Vice President for Innovation and Technology at IMANI Africa, has revealed that approximately 3.4 million Ghanaians—representing 17% of the adult population—are currently involved in cryptocurrency trading or related transactions.

Speaking at the MoMo Fintech Stakeholder Forum on Wednesday, October 15, Mr. Branttie highlighted the rapid growth of crypto adoption in Ghana, describing it as both a sign of digital advancement and a potential challenge to the country’s formal financial sector.

“There are 3.4 million Ghanaians doing crypto—about 17% of adults,” he said. “And this is only the beginning, especially given our youthful population pyramid. Many young people are just now entering the ecosystem.”

Branttie noted that a significant portion of this demographic operates almost entirely within the mobile money ecosystem, often bypassing traditional banks altogether.

He warned that the growth of this unregulated crypto space—estimated to be worth around GH¢3 billion annually—poses both a regulatory and economic challenge.

“This means the country is losing a GH¢3 billion market opportunity due to a lack of regulation,” he stated. “That’s revenue that could support fintech innovation and broader financial sector development, but it’s currently going untracked.”

He emphasized that without clear policies or oversight, Ghana risks missing out on the economic benefits of this fast-evolving sector as participation continues to rise.
