Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has admitted that emotions got the better of him following his side’s surprise EFL Cup defeat to League Two’s Grimsby Town, revealing that moments of frustration sometimes push him to the brink.
In the wake of Wednesday’s 2-1 loss at Old Trafford, Amorim gave a blunt post-match assessment, saying his team was “completely lost” and that “something has to change” — remarks that sparked speculation over his future at the club.
Though he initially declined to elaborate, Amorim addressed the comments during a press conference on Friday, acknowledging his emotional state at the time.
“To be really honest, every time we have a defeat like that in the future, I’m going to be like that,” he said. “Sometimes I hate my players, sometimes I love my players. Sometimes I want to quit, sometimes I want to be here for 20 years.”
The 40-year-old Portuguese coach admitted he needs to manage his emotions better but insisted his focus is now on the next match.
“I need to improve on that — it’s going to be hard — but right now I’m focused on the next game,” he said.
