The Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Ghana is calling on the government to urgently address the country’s escalating public debt, which it says has now surpassed GH¢800 billion.
According to the TUC, the unsustainable debt levels are severely undermining national development by diverting resources away from essential infrastructure and social services such as education and healthcare.
Speaking during the presentation of a petition to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat in Accra on Friday, August 29, TUC Secretary-General Joshua Ansah warned that Ghanaian workers would not continue to remain silent if decisive action is not taken.
“We want to announce our presence to the Government of Ghana through AfCFTA—that if nothing is done about our debt, which is denying us better schools, hospitals, and many amenities, Ghanaians will be forced to take action,” Ansah declared.
He added that the petition was also aimed at informing AfCFTA of the concerns and demands of workers across the continent, particularly in the face of growing economic challenges.
Receiving the petition on behalf of the Secretariat, Albert Kan-Dapaah Jnr., Senior Advisor to the AfCFTA Secretary-General, assured the union that the concerns would be forwarded to the appropriate authorities.
