Shun Vigilantes and Machomen in Akwatia By-Election – Peace Council Urges Political Parties

NPC calls for calm and compliance ahead of September 2 polls

The National Peace Council (NPC) has urged political parties, security agencies, and voters in Akwatia to prioritize peace and stability ahead of the upcoming by-election scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

In a statement issued in Accra on Friday, August 29, the Council revealed that it has held consultations with key stakeholders, including the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the Electoral Commission (EC), and the Ghana Police Service. All parties reportedly assured the NPC of their commitment to a peaceful electoral process before, during, and after the vote.

The Council strongly cautioned both the NDC and NPP against deploying vigilantes or “machomen,” warning that such actions are punishable under the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act, 2019 (Act 999).

“The NPC further encourages all stakeholders, particularly the two main contesting political parties, to ensure that the peace and security of Akwatia—and the country at large—is not compromised,” the statement emphasized.

To reinforce calm in the lead-up to the election, the Peace Council announced that it is ramping up public education and community engagement activities in the constituency through to September 1, 2025.

Additionally, the Council praised the recent conviction of eight individuals involved in the Ablekuma North by-election violence, calling it evidence of the state’s resolve to enforce law and order during elections.

The NPC concluded by reminding all stakeholders that elections are the lawful means of choosing leaders in Ghana’s democracy, and called on voters in Akwatia to contribute to preserving national peace.
