The Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has placed an immediate ban on the use of motorbikes after 7:00 pm in selected areas of the region, including the Asokore Mampong Municipality and the Kumasi Metropolis. The decision follows the fatal shooting of Alhaji Abdul-Malik Azenbge, the Chief of Kusaase, which occurred in Asawase on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.
Announcing the directive on Friday, July 25, Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene said the move is part of a series of emergency measures aimed at stabilizing tensions and preventing further violence in the wake of the tragic incident.
REGSEC held an emergency meeting on Wednesday, July 23, to evaluate the escalating security situation. Following the meeting, a number of new restrictions were rolled out to address concerns over public safety and rising inter-ethnic tensions.
In addition to the evening motorbike curfew, REGSEC has banned the use of unregistered motorbikes and those operating without functional lights. Riders are also prohibited from wearing smocks—traditional garments the council says are increasingly being used to conceal weapons.
Further security measures include the indefinite suspension of the intertribal football competition, as REGSEC seeks to avoid events that could trigger fresh clashes. A heightened security presence, involving both Police and Military personnel, will be maintained in hotspot areas to deter retaliation and maintain public order.
Dr. Amoakohene, speaking on behalf of the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, expressed condolences to the family of the late chief and assured the community that government is committed to pursuing justice.
He appealed to residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies, emphasizing REGSEC’s focus on restoring lasting peace and stability across the region.
