His Eminence Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson has emphasized that the transformation of Ghana must be a collective effort, not a burden carried solely by President John Dramani Mahama.
Speaking at the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving in Accra on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the former head of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development called on Ghanaians to unite in responsibility, blending spiritual commitment with civic virtue to drive meaningful progress.
“The transformation of this land will not be the task of just the president,” Cardinal Turkson stated. “No matter how good his intentions are, real change depends on all of us. We must not only be religious but truly spiritual. Our belief in God must shape how we see the world — and our role in it.”
He urged citizens to reflect deeply on their place within the vision they hold for Ghana, encouraging everyone to take personal responsibility in building a virtuous and ethical society.
“A believer in God must also craft a vision for the world — and define their own place within that vision,” he said. “It’s not enough to speak of national ideals; each of us must live out our part in achieving them.”
Cardinal Turkson also warned that without a foundation in moral integrity, the country could be consumed by greed, leading to serious consequences for all.
“If we fail to cultivate virtue, greed will take hold of this land,” he cautioned. “And when that happens, the cost will be borne by every one of us.”
