Kofi Adams Urges Tougher Sanctions for Football-Related Violence

Calls for punishment come amid GFA probe into pitch invasion and reported assaults

Minister for Youth and Sports, Kofi Adams, is urging authorities to impose tougher sanctions on individuals who incite or engage in violence at football matches, emphasizing that no one should be above the law.

His remarks follow the violent disruption of a Ghana Premier League Matchday 33 clash between Basake Holy Stars and Nations FC. Tensions flared when Nations FC players and officials stormed the pitch in protest of a controversial second penalty awarded to the home team. The situation spiraled out of control, leading to the game’s abandonment.

Disturbingly, Nations FC owner Dr. Kwame Kyei and club president Divine Kyei were reportedly assaulted during the chaos.

Speaking in an interview, Minister Adams stressed the importance of upholding discipline and accountability in football, regardless of an individual’s influence or political ties.

“Wrongdoing must be punished without fear or favour,” he stated. “Only by holding people accountable can we protect the integrity of our league and make it thrive.”

He also warned that continued incidents of violence could alienate local fans, pushing them toward international competitions instead.

“If this continues, 90% of football fans will shift their attention to foreign leagues, and our own league will suffer,” he cautioned.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has since launched an official investigation into the events surrounding the match.
