A 22-year-old man, Jebril Hamidu, has tragically drowned in an abandoned illegal mining (galamsey) pit in Juaboso, located in the Western North Region.
According to police reports, Jebril was reported missing by family members on May 31, 2025, after he left home around 2:00 a.m. in search of gold but never returned.
Following several hours of searching, police discovered his decomposing body submerged in a disused mining pit concealed by overgrown grass. Next to the body was a gold detector believed to be his. A waist bag recovered from the scene contained a mobile phone and GH¢250 in cash.
Authorities observed no external injuries or signs of foul play. His body has since been transported to the Juaboso Government Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Residents believe heavy rains the night before may have caused the pit to flood, possibly leading to Jebril’s accidental fall and drowning. Police investigations remain ongoing to confirm the exact cause of death.
