Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to officially become a Real Madrid player on Sunday, 1 June, after Liverpool agreed to an early release fee for the defender.
According to sources close to Liverpool, the fee is reported to be €10 million (£8.4 million), paid upfront by Real Madrid. However, insiders at the Spanish club suggest the actual amount may be lower.
This payment will allow the 26-year-old England right-back to join Real Madrid in time to participate in the upcoming expanded Club World Cup, which begins on 14 June in the United States.
Alexander-Arnold’s contract with Liverpool was due to expire on 30 June, meaning he could have moved on a free transfer at the end of the month. The early transfer ensures he can be registered during FIFA’s special summer window from 1 to 10 June, created specifically for this tournament.
The defender has agreed to a six-year contract with Real Madrid, which notably includes a staggering €1 billion (£840 million) buy-out clause.
Real Madrid’s first match of the Club World Cup will be against Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal on 18 June in Miami.
Before joining Real Madrid, Alexander-Arnold may add to his 33 England caps, having been named in the national squad for World Cup qualifiers against Andorra on 7 June and a friendly against Senegal on 10 June.
Having been with Liverpool since he was six years old, Alexander-Arnold has enjoyed an illustrious career with the club, winning two Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, and League Cup.
