One Killed, Nine Rescued in Collision at Elmina Checkpoint

Accident caused by wrongful overtaking; emergency teams responded promptly to rescue trapped victims.

A fatal crash on the Cape Coast–Takoradi highway has claimed one life and left nine others needing urgent rescue.

The incident took place on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, near the Elmina checkpoint, involving a Toyota Hiace (GR 1464-18) and a Zonda truck (GN 4197-21).

Firefighters from the University of Cape Coast Station, led by ACFO II Merinder Mary Attiga-Mensah, responded swiftly to a distress call at 3:25 p.m.

They secured the site, managed traffic, and coordinated with the Regional Headquarters Rescue Team.

Nine trapped passengers were safely extracted and transferred to the National Ambulance Service for medical attention at UCC.

While the Toyota Hiace driver escaped with minor injuries, one passenger was found unresponsive and rushed to Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, where they later succumbed.

Preliminary findings indicate the crash was caused by wrongful overtaking by the Toyota Hiace driver. The Toyota was severely damaged, with the Zonda truck sustaining partial damage.
