President Mahama Commends Fare Cut as Economy Stabilises

Mahama urges full compliance from drivers to ensure consistent fares across routes

President John Dramani Mahama has praised the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) for slashing transport fares, calling it a much-needed relief for citizens as the nation’s economy begins to recover.

The fare reduction, which took effect on Saturday, May 24, follows positive economic indicators, including a stabilising cedi and falling inflation.

Speaking at the College of Health in Kintampo during his Thank You Tour on Thursday, May 29, President Mahama expressed gratitude to transport unions for aligning their actions with the improving economic climate.

“Our currency is holding steady, inflation is on a downward trend, and investor confidence is on the rise,” he noted. “Ghanaians are gradually experiencing some relief, especially at the markets. I commend the GPRTU and driver unions for easing the burden on commuters by adjusting fares accordingly.”

Despite the official directive, there have been inconsistencies in implementation, with some drivers yet to adopt the reduced fares—leading to confusion among passengers.

The GPRTU has called on all its members to comply fully with the new pricing to maintain consistency and avoid disputes on the roads.
