Minority Walks Out of Parliament in Defiance Over Wontumi’s Detention

Parliament witnessed a dramatic protest on Thursday as the Minority caucus walked out in objection to the continued detention of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The walkout followed the failure of Wontumi’s legal team to meet the stringent conditions of a GHS50 million bail imposed by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Despite being granted bail, Wontumi remains in custody, as his team struggles to satisfy the requirement of two sureties.

Leading the protest, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin delivered a fiery speech, condemning EOCO for what he described as unjust and politically risky behavior.

“Investigative bodies must operate within the law and uphold fairness,” Afenyo-Markin asserted. “Many have faced investigations and were treated with dignity. But this pattern of selective treatment will come back to bite us politically in 2029 if we’re not careful.”

Wontumi has been held by EOCO since Tuesday, May 27, over alleged financial misconduct involving EXIMBANK. Afenyo-Markin questioned the fairness of the bail terms, labeling them excessive and unattainable.

“Where is he supposed to get GHS50 million worth of properties from?” he asked. “Until EOCO does what’s right, we, the NPP Minority in Parliament, will boycott proceedings and stand with Wontumi. We’re prepared to stay with him in custody if needed.”

He stressed that their protest is not about obstructing justice but about demanding equal treatment for all.

“I hope all my colleagues join this cause, so EOCO understands that Parliament stands united when it comes to Chairman Wontumi,” he concluded.
