ECG to Deploy 200 Transformers to Improve Power Distribution

Deployment targets improved reliability amid growing residential and industrial demand

In a decisive move to improve electricity supply and tackle recent outages, Energy and Green Transition Minister John Jinapor has directed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to immediately deploy 200 new transformers across key urban areas.

The directive comes in response to a wave of power fluctuations in recent weeks and is part of a broader effort to upgrade Ghana’s power distribution infrastructure to keep pace with rising residential and industrial energy demands.

Despite the intermittent load shedding, Minister Jinapor assured the public that Ghana’s overall electricity generation remains stable, even enabling continued exports to neighboring countries.

Addressing the 2025 West African Mining and Power Expo (WAMPEX) in Accra on Wednesday, May 28, the Minister emphasized the government’s dedication to delivering consistent and efficient energy.

“I’m pleased to report that power generation has stabilized recently. In fact, we’re exporting electricity,” Jinapor said.

“However, to ensure the power we generate reaches consumers reliably, I’ve authorized ECG to urgently install 200 transformers in major cities. This will significantly enhance both transmission and distribution systems.”

This initiative is expected to bring much-needed relief to affected communities and reinforce the national grid’s resilience.
