The Ghana Association of University Administrators at the University for Development Studies (GAUA-UDS) has announced an indefinite strike starting May 27, 2025.
This action protests the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission’s (GTEC) abrupt decision on April 28, 2025, to halt office-holding allowances for GAUA-UDS members occupying leadership and management roles at the university.
At a press briefing in Tamale, spokesperson Juliana Abilla Buame criticized the directive for being imposed without any consultation, calling it a violation of long-standing employment conditions and a breach of fairness, dialogue, and mutual respect. She expressed frustration that GTEC reversed its previous approval—originally granted on September 18, 2023—without engaging affected members.
Juliana highlighted that 108 GAUA-UDS members are deeply impacted by the withdrawal, with some unable to meet basic needs before the next salary cycle.
Following an emergency meeting on May 26, 2025, GAUA-UDS resolved to cease all services and duties until the directive is rescinded, withheld allowances are paid, and a Ministerial Committee is formed to establish a fair framework for office-holding allowances and member welfare.
She stressed that the strike will continue until these demands are met and meaningful dialogue is restored. The stoppage is expected to significantly disrupt ongoing university examinations, as GAUA-UDS members manage exam materials and oversee exam venues.
