The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has fiercely criticized what it calls a wave of politically driven intimidation and harassment against its members, allegedly orchestrated by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) through the abuse of state security agencies.
In a statement released on Friday, May 23, the NPP denounced these acts as an assault on democracy and a blatant violation of the rule of law, demanding an immediate end to what it termed “state-sponsored persecution.”
Public Outcry Over Adenta Kumi’s Arrest
The controversy intensified following the arrest of Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as “Adenta Kumi,” in a dramatic early morning raid. According to the NPP, six armed, masked individuals believed to be National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) agents stormed Kumi’s home and arrested him using excessive force.
Kumi had recently submitted a petition to President John Dramani Mahama calling for the dissolution of a committee probing the Chief Justice’s removal, alleging misconduct within the panel. The NPP sees his arrest as a calculated attempt to suppress dissent and obstruct due process.
“The government should be addressing these concerns through lawful procedures—not intimidation and brute force,” the NPP stated. “This kind of action undermines democratic accountability.”
Raid on Chairman Wontumi Raises Alarm
The party also condemned a similar raid on the home of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi. Despite informing authorities of a medical condition preventing his immediate appearance, armed personnel allegedly invaded his home ahead of the agreed date.
The NPP decried the incident as a clear example of political harassment aimed at weakening the opposition’s influence.
Call for National Solidarity
The party urged all Ghanaians, along with civil society groups and democratic institutions, to speak out against what it views as an orchestrated campaign to silence opposition voices and erode constitutional freedoms.
“These acts trample on civil liberties and undermine transparency and justice,” the NPP declared. “We call on every advocate of democracy to reject this ongoing political oppression.”
