Vice President Returns from Medical Leave, Mahama Cautions Against Rushing

Opoku-Agyemang expected to resume duties slowly after extended treatment abroad

President John Dramani Mahama has warmly welcomed Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang back to Accra, following her extended medical leave.

During her return on Thursday, May 22, Mahama cited optimistic reports from her doctors, humorously noting, “They say you’re 20 years younger—that’s what the professor told me. You’re healthy and ready for duty.”

Despite the encouraging prognosis, Mahama emphasized the importance of pacing herself, saying, “Let’s ease you in slowly and take it one step at a time.”

Opoku-Agyemang had been away for longer than the originally announced three weeks, seeking additional treatment abroad after initial care at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC). Her extended absence had stirred concerns about leadership continuity, particularly since both she and the President were out of the country during that period.

Now on the mend, the Vice President is expected to gradually resume her responsibilities, signaling a refreshed and revitalized return to public service.
