Gun Scandal at OKESS: Student and Stepfather Face GH¢80,000 Bail Over Firearm Possession

Bail Set for OKESS Student and Stepfather Following Arrest for Alleged Firearm Possession on School Grounds

A Mamponteng District Court has granted bail totalling GH¢80,000 to a student of Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School (OKESS) and his stepfather, following their arrest in connection with the alleged unlawful possession of a firearm.

Presided over by Judge Natacha Abena Tuffour, the court set bail at GH¢50,000 for the student and GH¢30,000 for his stepfather, Daniel Owusu Baafi.

Both must provide two sureties, with one for each being a salaried worker — earning at least GH¢4,000 for the student’s surety and GH¢3,000 for the stepfather’s.

The case stems from a May 14, 2025, incident in which the student was found with a locally made pistol on the school campus. Authorities were alerted by an assistant headmaster, leading to the student’s arrest.

During police investigations, the 16-year-old student claimed the weapon belonged to his stepfather, a pastor.

Baafi, however, denied ownership, stating in his caution statement that the pistol had belonged to his deceased uncle and was left in a room now used by the student.

The two were initially granted police enquiry bail before being formally charged under Section 192 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), which addresses unlawful possession of firearms.

The court has postponed the case to June 17, 2025, and is yet to take the pleas of the accused.
