Three lives have been tragically lost in the Adentan Municipality following heavy rainfall that triggered widespread flooding across parts of Accra on Sunday, May 18, 2025, confirmed Ella Esiman Nongo, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Adentan.
During an interview on Monday, May 19, Madam Nongo revealed that the fatalities occurred in various areas, including Lakeside, Nanakrom, and New Legon. “In Lakeside, two people perished, including a four-year-old girl from Nanakrom and a gentleman near New Legon,” she shared.
The devastating floods resulted from nearly three hours of continuous rain starting at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, leaving several communities submerged, including Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Adenta-Dodowa, and Tema. Roads became impassable, vehicles were stranded, and the Odaw drain, a key stormwater channel, overflowed due to the overwhelming water volume.
Emergency teams managed to rescue many residents stranded in the Ashiyie area, but Madam Nongo underscored the ongoing danger, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone regions. She attributed much of the flooding to construction in areas where water has no proper drainage route.
The MCE called for stricter enforcement of building codes and immediate action to address the root causes of flooding in Adentan and across Greater Accra.
