Government, Energy Leaders Unite to Tackle Power Sector Challenges

Finance and Energy Ministers Lead Talks on Power Sector Reforms

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has revealed that he, alongside Energy Minister Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, held a candid and constructive meeting with key players in Ghana’s power sector to address long-standing challenges and explore sustainable energy solutions.

The high-level engagement brought together representatives from major institutions including the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), Volta River Authority (VRA), Energy Commission, and GRIDCo.

Discussions centered on pressing issues affecting the sector, such as legacy debts, tariff concerns, inefficiencies in operations, and the financial burden of high-cost power purchase agreements.

While recognizing the severe financial strain facing the sector, Dr. Forson emphasized that the main objective of the meeting was to identify realistic and long-term strategies for achieving stability and sustainability.

“Our conversation focused on the urgent need for effective and sustainable solutions to strengthen Ghana’s power sector,” he stated.

The session concluded with a strong, collective commitment from all stakeholders to advance the Energy Sector Recovery Programme (ESRP). The initiative aims to improve operational efficiency, implement sound financial strategies, and deliver reliable, affordable electricity to Ghanaians.

Dr. Forson noted that stabilizing the power sector is critical not only for energy security but also for protecting the broader economy from the negative impacts of persistent inefficiencies in electricity supply.
