A High Court in Kumasi has handed down a life sentence to Dominic Afriyie, also known as GH, for the murder of 43-year-old pharmacist and building contractor Michael Dela Agbo Klu.
In addition, Afriyie received a 120-year sentence with hard labour on two robbery charges.
The verdict was delivered after Afriyie was found guilty of a violent home invasion in Atasemanso, Kumasi, in November 2021, during which he fatally shot Mr. Klu. The court, presided over by His Honour Abdul Razak and a seven-member jury, convicted the 36-year-old after a full trial, despite his plea of not guilty.
Deadly Home Invasion
On November 20, 2021, Afriyie broke into Mr. Klu’s home at gunpoint, robbing the family of two mobile phones, a laptop, and GH¢1,500 in cash. He then shot and killed Mr. Klu during the incident.
Following the murder, police tracked Afriyie down through intelligence received on December 30, 2021, about a planned robbery in the same area.
A surveillance operation led to his arrest in the early hours of December 31, 2021, along with three others, while they were traveling in a Toyota Corolla (registration AS 5970-20). Officers found two pistols and two single-barrel shotguns in the vehicle.
Further investigation confirmed that Afriyie acted alone in the robbery and murder of Mr. Klu.
The sentencing closes a high-profile case that deeply disturbed the Atasemanso community and drew widespread condemnation.
