Atta Akyea: My Client May Be Forced to Breach Security Oath in Court

Former NSB director’s defence strategy may force a public breach of classified information

Samuel Atta Akyea, counsel for embattled former National Signals Bureau (NSB) director Kwabena Adu-Boahene, has issued a strong caution that his client may be forced to expose sensitive national security details in order to defend himself in court.

Speaking to the press on Tuesday, May 13, Atta Akyea highlighted that the complexity of the charges—ranging from theft and money laundering to causing financial loss to the state—may necessitate full disclosure of classified matters during the legal proceedings.

“If they push him into a corner, he has no choice but to mount a full defence, even if that means revealing protected national security information,” Akyea stated. “He isn’t trying to dodge responsibility, but once national security is in play, the truth has to come out.”

He warned that the handling of the case requires extreme caution, noting the potential fallout if intelligence-related information enters the public domain. “Later, people may question why someone who swore an oath to secrecy is now disclosing classified matters—but that may be the only way to clear his name,” he added.

Meanwhile, Adu-Boahene remains in custody despite the expiration of a court-ordered seven-day remand. According to Atta Akyea, his client was rearrested on a separate issue immediately after the initial detention period ended.
