Authorities in Buhweju District, western Uganda, are waiting for a court order to exhume the body of a 53-year-old man, allegedly murdered and buried by his wife beneath their bedroom floor.
The wife, 46-year-old Nshemererwe, was arrested after she confessed to striking her husband, Patrick Bainomugisha, during a domestic argument on the night of April 13, 2025.
The fatal blow, she claimed, was a mistake when she hit him with a club in the back of his neck, causing his immediate death.
The incident, arising from tensions over family responsibilities, particularly the husband’s failure to pay school fees, has left the local community shaken.
After Bainomugisha was reported missing before Easter, concerned residents alerted the authorities. By Sunday evening, police had secured the house, awaiting legal clearance to search the bedroom where the body is believed to be concealed.
The suspect was apprehended on April 14 while attempting to flee to Mbarara City and is currently in police custody at Buhweju Police Station.
Police officials stress the importance of following proper legal procedures for the exhumation. Buhweju District authorities are also calling for greater responsibility among family heads to prevent domestic violence in their communities.
