Mahama Warns Appointees: Breach Code of Conduct and Face Sanctions

President outlines strict consequences for ethical violations in public office

President John Dramani Mahama has issued a firm warning to all political appointees, making it clear that any breach of the newly launched Code of Conduct will be met with strict disciplinary action, regardless of rank or political influence.

Speaking at the official launch of the Code on Monday, May 5, President Mahama emphasized that the policy is designed to establish clear ethical standards for public officials and to rebuild public trust in governance.

Among the prohibited actions outlined in the Code are the awarding of government contracts to oneself, close relatives, or associates, as well as the use of insider information for personal gain. The President labeled such conduct a “betrayal of public trust.”

He made it clear that there will be no tolerance for ethical misconduct:

“If you are involved in contracting with companies linked to yourself or your family, or using privileged government information for personal benefit, you will face consequences,” he stated.

Sanctions for violations will range from formal reprimands and suspensions to immediate dismissal, depending on the severity of the offense.

Mahama also stressed the importance of transparency and full disclosure from all public officials, especially in matters involving business interests.

“If you are a silent or dormant partner in any company doing business with government—whether within or outside your ministry—you must officially declare it in writing to the Office of the President,” he said.
“Not by phone, not through a relative—by formal written declaration. Failure to comply will attract disciplinary measures.”

The introduction of the Code of Conduct is part of the Mahama administration’s wider initiative to promote ethical leadership, accountability, and good governance across all public service institutions.
