Govt Working to Reintegrate Ghanaians Facing U.S. Deportation – Ablakwa
Foreign Affairs Ministry assures support for returnees as 160 Ghanaians face imminent deportation under renewed U.S. immigration crackdown

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has assured Ghanaians that it is actively working to support the safe return and reintegration of citizens facing deportation from the United States.
This follows intensified immigration enforcement measures under the renewed Trump administration, which has led to the arrest of over 3,500 undocumented immigrants since President Donald Trump’s return to office on January 20, 2025. Deportation operations have resumed, with reports indicating that some migrants are being transported on U.S. military aircraft.
According to the Pew Research Center, the U.S.—with a population of approximately 341 million—currently hosts an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants. Among those affected are 160 Ghanaian nationals now facing imminent deportation.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra ahead of the ECOWAS at 50 celebrations, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, revealed that while no major updates have been received from Ghana’s embassy in Washington, comprehensive steps are being taken to ensure a smooth and dignified return process for those affected.
“We are aware that about 160 Ghanaians are currently on the deportation list. The deportation exercise is ongoing,” Ablakwa confirmed.
He emphasized the government’s focus on handling the situation with discretion and respect for human rights.
“On humanitarian grounds, and out of respect for the dignity of our compatriots, we’ve chosen not to publicize their identities or situations in the media,” he said. “Our teams are at the airport to receive them, assist with reintegration, and reunite them with their families.”
Ablakwa added that the ministry is working closely with local and international partners to ensure a coordinated and compassionate reintegration process.
“We are doing this quietly but effectively because it is essential that we protect the dignity of our fellow Ghanaians.”
