Cheaper Data Bundles Coming on Five National Holidays – Sam George
Communication Minister announces landmark agreement with telcos to ease data costs on key holidays.

Ghanaians can look forward to cheaper and enhanced data bundles on five national holidays this year, following a new agreement between the Ministry of Communications and major telecom operators.
Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday, Communications Minister Sam Nartey George revealed the initiative, which builds on the discounted data bundles offered on Independence Day.
“We agreed with the telco CEOs that Ghanaians will enjoy cheaper data on five holidays: Independence Day, May Day, Republic Day, Founders’ Day, and Farmers’ Day,” said the Ningo-Prampram MP.
Initially, the minister proposed discounted data on all 18 national holidays, but after negotiations, a compromise was reached.
“What we did on Independence Day—the enhanced bundles—that’s going to be replicated,” he confirmed, noting that the goal is to ease digital access for Ghanaians on symbolic national days.
Data Reform Roadmap
Sam George also addressed public expectations regarding lower data prices, clarifying that he promised a roadmap, not an immediate price drop.
“In 13 days, the committee delivered a roadmap with short, medium, and long-term strategies,” he said. While widespread price reductions aren’t feasible in the short term, the Ministry is targeting specific demographics through a data-driven approach.
“We’re building databases to identify groups that need support. Once that’s ready, we’ll announce the relief packages,” he explained.
Tackling Structural Costs
The Minister further pointed to systemic challenges such as taxation and electricity costs as key barriers to affordable data. He disclosed plans to work with the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to create a special telecom power tariff, similar to the one granted to mining companies.
“Telecom towers consume massive electricity, yet they don’t benefit from bulk power rates like mining firms do. That needs to change,” he said.
Telcos Back Reform Efforts
Sam George praised the telcos for their cooperation. “All three CEOs agreed that data pricing must be addressed. I’m extremely grateful for their commitment.”
He concluded by reassuring the public that while reforms won’t happen overnight, meaningful changes are on the way.
“This is not just talk. We’re putting in the work.”
