“The Fire in Him Is Good for Kumasi” – John Darko Backs Mayor’s Zeal, Urges Moderation

Suame MP supports Kumasi Mayor’s passion for sanitation reform, but cautions against excessive force.

Member of Parliament for Suame, John Darko, has expressed support for the energy and determination displayed by the new Mayor of Kumasi, amid growing public debate over his methods for restoring order in the city.

The MP acknowledged the pressing need to address sanitation and unauthorized trading in the Ashanti Regional capital, praising the Mayor’s commitment to the task.

“Our city needs help. He mentioned he wants to clean up the city of Otumfuo, and I agree—Kumasi needs that,” Darko stated. “I think he may have acted out of overzealousness. I haven’t met him personally, but I believe the fire in him is good for Kumasi.”

The Mayor has recently come under scrutiny following his aggressive campaign to remove unauthorized structures and street hawkers. His approach, which reportedly included threats of flogging non-compliant traders, has sparked a mix of support and concern among residents and civil society groups.

While condemning any form of violence or excessive force, Darko emphasized the need for firm but lawful enforcement of city regulations.

“Flogging is not the answer—he must be advised. But at the same time, we must enforce the Local Government Act and the Assembly’s bye-laws to help him succeed,” he said.

Call for Non-Partisan Support

The Suame MP also called for Ghanaians to support local governance efforts without political bias, urging a more unified approach to urban management.

“Let’s depoliticize these issues and give our mayors the space to work. We need some sanity in our cities,” he added.

Darko’s remarks come as the Mayor’s leadership style continues to generate nationwide conversation—praised by some for bold action, but criticized by others for the potential risk of human rights violations.
