Madonna and Elton John Reconcile After Long-Standing Feud Over Lip-Syncing
"Forgive Me": Elton John's Apology Ends Decades-Long Madonna Spat

Madonna and Sir Elton John have finally reconciled, putting an end to their long-running feud that was sparked by accusations of lip-syncing.
The tension between the two music icons dates back years, with Sir Elton, 78, frequently criticizing Madonna for allegedly lip-syncing during her performances. This led to a public back-and-forth, with Madonna’s team defending her in 2004, insisting she didn’t waste time criticizing other artists.
However, the pair recently made amends after Madonna took the initiative to confront Sir Elton following his performance on Saturday Night Live (SNL) over the weekend. In an Instagram post, Madonna shared that the first thing Sir Elton said was, “forgive me,” marking the moment when the “wall” between them was finally broken.
The 66-year-old Vogue singer expressed her admiration for Sir Elton, revealing that she had been a fan of his since she was a teenager. “Seeing him perform when I was in high school changed the course of my life,” she wrote, adding that it had always hurt her to know that someone she had admired for so long openly criticized her as an artist.
The roots of their strained relationship trace back to the early 2000s. In 2004, Sir Elton mocked Madonna’s nomination for Best Live Act at the Q Awards, using explicit language to dismiss her performance, accusing her of lip-syncing. “Anyone who lip-syncs in public on stage when you pay £75 to see them should be shot,” he declared at the time. Madonna’s team swiftly denied these accusations.
Sir Elton continued his criticism in the years that followed. In 2012, after Madonna’s song Masterpiece won a Golden Globe for Best Original Song, he remarked that Madonna didn’t stand a “chance” of winning the award. Later, Madonna quipped that she hoped Sir Elton would speak to her for the next couple of years, acknowledging his tendency to get upset with her.
But now, it seems the two have turned a new page. In her recent Instagram post, Madonna hinted that their reconciliation could lead to a musical collaboration, revealing that Sir Elton had written a song for her and wanted to work together.
In response, Sir Elton thanked Madonna for “forgiving me and my big mouth,” acknowledging that he regretted his past comments. He praised Madonna for her trailblazing influence on the music industry, particularly for her role in paving the way for female artists to succeed and stay true to themselves.
“I’m increasingly distressed by all the divisiveness in our world at the moment,” Sir Elton commented. “By pulling together, I’m hopeful that we can make great things happen for those who really need support, and have a lot of fun doing it.”
The reconciliation between the two iconic musicians marks a hopeful end to their public discord, with fans eagerly anticipating what this newfound friendship might mean for their future collaborations.
