U.S.-Ghana Relations Remain Strong Despite Tariff Tensions – Ambassador Palmer
Diplomatic ties between the U.S. and Ghana are solid, with both nations committed to resolving trade concerns.

U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, reaffirmed the resilience of diplomatic and trade relations between the United States and Ghana, despite tensions over a new 10% tariff on Ghanaian exports to the U.S.
Her comments followed a productive closed-door discussion with Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. The conversation, lasting over an hour, focused on the potential impacts of the tariff on bilateral trade.
In her address to the press, Ambassador Palmer emphasized the enduring strength of U.S.-Ghana relations and the shared commitment to enhancing these ties.
She stated, “I had a constructive conversation with the Minister of Foreign Affairs. We discussed the robustness of our relationship and explored ways to strengthen it further, while addressing the tariff issue.”
While acknowledging Ghana’s concerns, she reiterated the U.S.’s commitment to ongoing dialogue and cooperation. The Ambassador expressed hope that Ghana might find strategic advantages in comparison to its competitors despite the new tariff.
