Two Chinese Nationals and 11 Ghanaians Arrested for Illegal Mining in Western Region

Authorities intensify efforts to curb environmental damage from unregulated mining activities

In a significant move against illegal mining, two Chinese nationals—Huan Ciongjian, 38, and Ling Yong, 56—along with 11 Ghanaians have been arrested in the Western Region.

The Chinese suspects were apprehended near the Bonsa River during an operation led by the Western Central Regional Police Command, aimed at tackling illegal mining.

They have been handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for further investigation and possible repatriation.

Meanwhile, seven Ghanaians—including Ibrahim Dauda, Michael Tettey Komlorm, and others—are facing charges of conspiracy and operating mining activities without the necessary licenses.

These suspects have been remanded in custody, with a court hearing scheduled for April 17, 2025. Four additional suspects are also expected to face similar charges.

This operation is part of a broader initiative by authorities to fight illegal mining and mitigate its devastating environmental impact.
