MTN Ghana Deepens Digital Inclusion with Local Language AI and Stakeholder Engagement in Wa

One of the event’s major highlights was the introduction of Abena.ai

MTN Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to digital inclusion and community-driven innovation during a regional stakeholders’ forum held in Wa on October 21, 2025. The event brought together traditional authorities, policymakers, entrepreneurs, media representatives, and long-time customers to explore how the company can better align its services with local needs while advancing digital transformation in the Upper West Region.

The forum highlighted MTN’s investment in technology and infrastructure aimed at bridging the digital divide. Mr. Joseph Dogbe, Chief Risk and Compliance Officer at Scancom PLC, revealed that the company has invested over GH¢1 billion in digital infrastructure over the past five years, with GH¢240 million allocated in 2025 to expand fibre optic and 4G networks in preparation for a nationwide 5G rollout.

One of the event’s major highlights was the introduction of Abena.ai, Ghana’s first multilingual AI voice assistant, capable of interacting in Twi, Ewe, Hausa, Ga, Dagbani, and English. The innovation underscores MTN’s vision of making digital technology inclusive and culturally relevant to all Ghanaians. Other innovations showcased included the MTN DigiFest platform, designed to promote digital literacy, and the MoMo Business App, developed to empower small and medium-sized enterprises with efficient financial management tools.

Mr. Dogbe emphasized that MTN’s operations are guided by transparency, gender inclusivity, and data protection, aligning with international compliance standards while addressing Ghana’s local realities.

Madam Efua Falconer, Corporate Communications Manager, reflected on MTN’s 15-year journey in the Upper West Region and reiterated the company’s dedication to enhancing customer satisfaction and service quality. She noted that the Wa forum was part of a series of engagements across 12 regions, with plans to extend the initiative nationwide to ensure that customers’ voices remain central to MTN’s strategy.

The Wa Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Issah Nurah Danwanaa, commended MTN for its developmental role in the region but urged the company to decentralize its customer service operations to ease congestion at the Wa office. He proposed the establishment of satellite service centres to improve accessibility and efficiency.

Local media representatives also called for stronger collaboration with MTN, encouraging greater use of indigenous languages in communication and outreach programs. They noted that using local dialects enhances public understanding and strengthens community trust.

Through this engagement, MTN Ghana reinforced its dual mission—to drive nationwide digital transformation and foster inclusive communication that empowers every Ghanaian, regardless of language or location.
