Mahama Pledges Catholic University and Regional Hospital for Damongo

He explained that the new regional hospital will also serve as a teaching facility for the university

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to establish two significant projects in the Savannah Region: a Catholic Science and Technology University and a Regional Hospital in Damongo.

The President made the commitment during a courtesy call at the Presidency by the Catholic Metropolitan Archbishop of Tamale, Most Rev. Philip Naameh.

Funding and Academic Focus

President Mahama stated that the initial funding for the proposed university will be drawn from a $30 million grant promised by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

He explained that the new regional hospital will also serve as a teaching facility for the university. The university is planned to feature a Faculty of Medical Sciences dedicated to training doctors and other allied health professionals, integrating medical education directly with the regional hospital’s operations.

The President used the discussion to reiterate the government’s commitment to revamping Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions nationwide.

Archbishop Naameh, who proposed the name and location for the university, used the meeting to raise various educational and social issues affecting Ghana’s northern sector, making a passionate plea for government intervention.

The meeting was attended by Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu, Presidential Advisor Joyce Bawah Mogtari, and other key government officials.
