Former West Ham manager Graham Potter has been appointed as the new head coach for the Sweden national team.
The 50-year-old has taken on the job on an initial short-term basis with the immediate goal of salvaging Sweden’s struggling World Cup qualification campaign.
“I am very humbled by the assignment, but also incredibly inspired,” Potter said. “Sweden has fantastic players who deliver in the world’s best leagues during the weeks. My job will be to create the conditions so that we as a team deliver at the highest level to take Sweden to the World Cup next summer.”
Sweden had been searching for a replacement since the dismissal of Jon Dahl Tomasson after their 1-0 loss to Kosovo on October 13th, a result that ruled out automatic World Cup qualification. However, the team still has a route to the play-offs thanks to their success in the 2024-25 Nations League.
Potter takes the role shortly after his sacking by West Ham at the end of September. His tenure with the Hammers lasted only nine months, during which he managed just six wins in 23 matches, with five losses in the opening six games of the 2025-26 season leaving the club in the bottom three.
Despite his recent struggles in the Premier League with West Ham and a seven-month spell at Chelsea, Potter remains highly regarded in Sweden. He previously led Östersund through a remarkable ascent, achieving three promotions in four seasons and taking them from the fourth division to the top flight, including a domestic cup win in 2017. Potter also previously managed Brighton and Swansea City before moving to Stamford Bridge in 2022.
